How To Sing Along Karaoke Style

By Barbara Tomlin

If you have found yourself singing along with your favorite artist on the radio or TV only to find you couldn't remember the words to the song when you try to sing it solo, you will love singing Karaoke style.
The premise to singing karaoke is "having fun". When a person who has never sung expresses interest rather than jumping up on stage and performing, they are saying, "Karaoke looks like a lot fun; I want to perform, but I don't want to make a fool of myself." Being prepared to perform before performing is the best solution. Just like when it comes to exercising any other muscle, the vocal chords appreciate being warmed up before performing at their optimum.
Here's what I recommend for first-timers:

(1) Practice what you want to sing before you go out to perform. Practice in the shower. Rid yourself of shyness by practicing in front of a mirror. Be aware of your facial expressions when performing. If you believe in yourself your audience will see it in your expression. If you have Internet access, you can practice to karaoke tracks online. Alternatively, check with your local cable company and see if they offer karaoke in their video-on-demand line up. Watching the words on the screen will not only help you keep time to the music but relax you in knowing what to expect on stage. If you have a computer at home, invite your friends over for a private karaoke party first.

(2) Pretend you are already a "star" and make yourself up for the performance. Your attire and appearance will help you gain confidence when it comes to "selling" your song.

(3) Practice "karaoke etiquette". Don't hold the mic too close and don't toss it around. Don’t cut in on someone else's singing without their prior permission. See BrianX's Karaoke Etiquette Guide for more info.

(4) Be prepared to laugh. When all else fails, think "comedian". Remember, it's not about being perfect but being comfortable and engaging the audience to have fun along with you. If you mess up the lyrics, it's okay to let out a chuckle and improvise to get yourself back on track.

(5) When you got out to sing for the first time, take your own fan club with you. Your friends can help build momentum for audience engagement. And last, but not least, be sure to thank your audience and your KJ when you are done.
